You’re busy. We get it – we all are. But you are here because you want to know how you can fit learning a new instrument into your busy schedule – congratulations, you’ve taken the first step already!
One of the biggest motivators that will help you get started learning your new instrument is the fact that you actually want to learn it. When you want it, you are more willing to set aside time and prioritize that time in your schedule. Motivation will keep you going, but desire will get you to start in the first place.
Once you’ve decided that you want to, the next question to answer is: How? How will you prioritize your lesson and practice time in a way that allows for growth in musicianship and creativity?
1. Pick a portable instrument
Sometimes the only time we have to practice is on our lunch break at work. Unless you have a piano at your workplace, or even at home, you aren’t going to be able to make use of that time if you choose piano as your instrument to learn. Opt to learn guitar or smaller strings, woodwinds, or brass so that you can take your instrument anywhere.
2. Block out time
Speak with your teacher about how often and how much time you should spend practicing throughout the week, and then find time in your schedule accordingly. Even if it is in 10-minute segments between work throughout the day, put it in your schedule.
3. Minimize Distractions and set a timer
Turn your phone on airplane mode. Log out of social media. Close your computer. Turn off the TV. Shut the door.
Wherever you end up for your practice times, make sure that it is a focused time. Since you aren’t able to devote hours upon hours to practicing, you need to make the most of the time you have. Set a timer for however long you’ve blocked out for practicing, and allow yourself to focus solely on your instrument for that time block.
